Internationally acclaimed comedian Daniel Sloss will offer a unique take on life in Thurso when he performs a live online show next week.

Daniel, who spent many summers in the town when he was growing up, is putting on the event to help Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT).

Trust board members say they are thrilled that he is taking the time to do a special show dedicated to the town and hope it will provide "a much-needed laugh”.

TCDT is leading a number of community initiatives and has been at the forefront of the community response to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Thurso area.

Daniel (30) has performed worldwide and his two hour-long comedy specials for Netflix – Dark and Jigsaw – are streaming in 190 countries and in 26 languages.

The trust got in touch after the comedian mentioned his Caithness family connections in an interview last month on The Graham Norton Show on BBC One. A speculative email has resulted in a Thurso edition of Day Drinking with Dan, to be shown on the live-streaming platform Twitch on Friday, February 26, starting at 6pm.

TCDT pointed out that Daniel's grandmother still resides in the town and, when approached, he was eager to donate his time and get involved.

The show will be for mature audiences.

Members of the public will be encouraged to watch along, post comments and, if they wish, make a donation to TCDT.

The organisers say the show will be "a celebration of all those who have worked hard to keep themselves, friends, family and colleagues safe and of those who have been struggling without social connection or their usual routines".

Board member Marion O’Brien said: “The trust has been working hard with significant numbers of volunteers to provide community support to residents since the beginning of the pandemic.

"The team had some ideas for events which would give the community a boost and, as usual, we were trying to think outside the box. It was then that Graham Norton provided us with our comedian in shining armour!

"We’ve always been of the ‘don’t ask, don’t get’ opinion and so we sent an email and hoped for the best.”

TCDT development manager Joan Lawrie said: “Combating social isolation is a steady vein that runs through all the projects of the trust. We’re really excited to have Daniel stream a special show for us and hope that many residents of Thurso will enjoy it.

"The beauty of it being streamed live and free is that anyone with Thurso or Caithness connections can tune in for a giggle. Our aim is to provide a much-needed laugh in dark times.”

Board member Scott Shearer said: “Without our usual fix of socialising, we wanted to host an event that would emulate the feeling of going to a gig or the pub as best we could – and we’re thrilled that Daniel has given us the opportunity to do that.

"He’s a top-quality comedian and I can’t wait to see how he roasts Thurso. I doubt it’ll be for the faint-hearted!”

Some will remember Daniel from a previous Thurso performance when he did a stand-up show in Skinandis nightclub.

When restrictions allow, Daniel will be hitting the road to perform sell-out shows in the USA, Europe and Australia as well as promoting his new book.

Daniel's 10th solo show, Daniel Sloss: X, received rave reviews on a tour that spanned 300 performances across 40 countries. It premiered on HBO in the USA and Canada in 2019 and made history with its UK release, being the first comedy special to make its national debut on the big screen, at Vue, in February 2020.

His latest show, Daniel Sloss: Hubris, premiered in New York just before the pandemic and the worldwide tour has been rescheduled for 2021/22.

The live stream can be viewed at www.twitch.tv/daniel_sloss

It is likely to involve strong language and so will be unsuitable for children.
