Inflation-busting rent increases have been approved for council garages in Caithness.

Highland Council's Caithness committee this week agreed to a 7.95 per cent increase in rents for the local authority's garages, and a 10 per cent increase for garage sites in the county.

The council owns 231 garages in Caithness, as well as 382 garage sites – which bring in more than £180,000 in rent each year.

Approving the rent increase, the council stressed that the extra money raised will be "ring fenced" and spent to fund garage repairs and other related improvements – and will help to partly offset increases in the cost of such repairs.

Chairman of the committee, Councillor Ron Gunn said: “Garages and garage sites across Caithness are competitively priced by comparison to commercial storage solutions and this moderate increase will support and fund garage repairs and improvements.”

The rate increase will commence from April, and garage tenants will be notified by letter.
