THE man hired to help revitalise Wick and Thurso town centres has stepped down from the post.

Alan Steven was forced to quit as town centre development manager yesterday after experiencing a prolonged period of ill health.

Mr Steven was hired in March by Caithness Chamber of Commerce as the sole officer in charge of a two-year project to help increase business and tourism in Thurso and Wick.

Business development manger Nicola Dreaves has taken over his position on a temporary basis.

Trudy Morris, chief executive officer of Caithness Chamber of Commerce, confirmed Mr Steven had stepped down.

She said: "Alan Steven has indeed resigned following a period of ill health."

She said despite Mr Steven’s resignation, the chamber still remains committed to the £120,000 project for the next two years.

Talks are due to take place between the chamber and funders of the project to discuss the best way forward.
