THE start of a new year could be the ideal time to begin researching your family tree, according to Caithness Family History Society (CFHS).

The group is holding a meeting in Thurso next week at which genealogical advice will be available.

A spokesperson for CFHS said: "New Year resolutions do not always have to be about taking more exercise or eating healthily! You may decide that this is the year to begin your family tree, or make a serious effort to break through the brick wall which halted your previous research. Perhaps you have the birth and marriage records for an ancestor, but cannot trace a death record. Or you may have found a few people with the same name and you are wondering how to confirm which one belongs to your family.

"Whatever your problem, help is at hand! Caithness Family History Society intends to hold a meeting where you can air your problems and get some advice. Bring along as much information as you can to enable the society to help you."

The meeting – entitled Bring Your Brick Wall – will be held in Thurso Library, Davidson's Lane, on Wednesday, January 8, starting at 7pm.
