WICK had its hottest day in years today as the temperature soared to more than 23 degrees Celsius, according to local weather-watcher Keith Banks.

The temperature had reached 23.4 degrees Celsius or 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit by 2pm.

Keith said: "High pressure over north Germany, and low pressure to the west of the UK, has created a southerly airflow. This is sourcing increasingly very warm and humid air that originated from France, Spain and North Africa.

"The warmth and high moisture content associated with the airmass affecting us is likely to generate thunderstorms over France and these may well move northwards across the far north late on Tuesday night and during Wednesday morning."

Wick's hottest day on record was on June 6, 1939, when the temperature reached 26.7 degrees Celsius or 80.1 Fahrenheit.

"There is a possibility the UK's record highest temperature will be broken on Thursday. The record is presently 38.5C (101.3F) reached in August 2003," Keith added.
