Hotel owner Ellie Lamont said: "This is a donation from the family because Wick gala does such a great job in bringing tourists to the town. They entertain people and work tirelessly to make sure that it all runs smoothly. It's such an asset for the town."

Mrs Lamont said that in many places local galas have stopped but in Wick "it just keeps going on and on".

The chairperson of the gala committee, Anderina Cass, said: "It's an absolutely wonderful donation and it's very, very kind of the family to give it to us. The money will be used within the community."

Gala queen Maja said she was delighted to accept the cheque on behalf of the committee.
