Hints and tints at college hair day
AN award-winning salon owner has helped to inspire hairdressers and students during a recent visit to Caithness.
Colin McAndrew, managing director of salon group Medusa in Edinburgh, visited North Highland College in Thurso for a Wella-organised show.
He demonstrated the innovative cutting techniques which have put him at the forefront of the industry to an audience of students, staff and hairdressers from across the Highlands.
Colin is the artistic director for the National Hairdressers’ Federation Inspire Art Team and has won and been nominated for numerous industry awards. He emphasised the importance of basic hairdressing techniques and how to combine these with more advanced creative methods to style a client’s hair to suit their face shape.
Colin and his colleague, Wella hair colour specialist John Akram, shared cutting and colouring techniques, and offered an insight into the latest looks, tips on running a busy salon, the benefits of entering hairdressing competitions and the advantages of using Twitter to follow the latest trends created by hairdressing professionals.

Colin’s four models for the day were local girls Alana Swanson, Jennifer Easton, Linsey Miller and Vana Guy.
SVQ level 3 hairdressing student Laura Cowie said: “I’m thrilled that we are given the opportunity to be part of these Wella days.
“Colin’s seminar was really interesting and informative. He clearly demonstrated the techniques and I learned a lot of useful tips from him.”
