Scotland decided its future did fit with the United Kingdom.
Scotland decided its future did fit with the United Kingdom.

THE people of the Highlands voted to stay in the United Kingdom in last night’s referendum as they decided Scotland would not be better going it alone.

Returning officer Steve Barron announced this morning (Friday) that 87,739 people in the Highland Council area (53 per cent) voted No compared to 78,069 voters (47 per cent) who voted Yes. In a 87 per cent turn-out, 165,976 ballot papers were returned out of an electorate of 190,778.

The Highlands was the final local authority to declare after the count was delayed by 90 minutes due to a serious road accident at Berriedale Braes. The A9 was closed as emergency services attended to the scene and vans carrying ballot boxes from Caithness were forced to divert via Strath-Halladale before rejoining the A9 at Helmsdale.

Scotland voted to stay in the Union with 2,001,926 people voted No compared to 1,617,989 in a 86 per cent turn-out.
