Highland has been ranked 22nd in a list highlighting the most crime-ridden areas among Scotland's 32 local authorities.

A study by A-Plan Insurance found that Highland recorded 319 crimes per 10,000 people, based on government data covering offences committed between May 2020 and March 2021.

It looked at different types of crimes as well as overall numbers for each local authority area.

Dundee had the highest rate at 688 per 10,000 people. Glasgow was close behind, with 682 crimes per 10,000 people, followed by West Dunbartonshire (632), North Lanarkshire (530) and Aberdeen (513).

The two least crime-ridden areas were Orkney (144) and Shetland (195).

A spokesperson for A-Plan Insurance said: “Protecting ourselves from crime is an essential part of everyday life and this study very interestingly shows that the type of crime committed across the country varies by region.

"Fraud is reported massively more than any other crime, perhaps due to the pandemic and movement to online crime. The research also highlights that no area is free from crime and therefore we need to remain vigilant in all parts of our lives, whether we’re at home, out and about or online.”

  • This is an update to an earlier version of the story which stated wrongly that Highland was at number 23 on the list.
