Highland police officer finds drug driver while off duty

An off-duty police officer encountered a vehicle at the side of the road on the A9 south of the Berriedale Braes and called in his colleagues after discovering the driver was "under the influence of something".

Dylan Harrison's speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed Wick Sheriff Court heard today.

A roadside test for alcohol was negative but he tested positive for drugs.

The 29-year-old electrical engineer pleaded guilty and was banned for a year and fined £500.

Solicitor David Paterson said that the accused had taken prescribed medication but when it had no effect "he took more than he should have."

Sheriff Neil Wilson gave Harrison, of 1 Elpin, Alloa, credit for his early plea and full co-operation with the police.
