A day of disruption on trains from Perth to Inverness came to an end at 5pm this evening.

ScotRail confirmed that the Highland Main Line was back in action after an emergency repair job to a broken rail at Kingussie.

The incident happened at around 11.30pm this morning and halted all the Highland line trains from then on.

Passengers had to leave their trains and wait for alternative arrangements to be made, notably local coaches.

The operation was not without its troubles, as one traveller told the Strathy this afternoon.

"We have been left to wait in the cold here at Pitlochry and they say it will be four o'clock before we're running again," said John Galloway.

The first coaches to arrive were heavily over-subscribed by local passengers, he said, and the long wait went on until the 40 train customers were uplifted.

"I'll miss my connection at Inverness for the Thurso train whatever happens," said Mr Galloway, himself a bus worker, with Stagecoach, in the far north.

The evening Tesco train headed south from Aviemore gingerly on time, but found it could carry on its way through Kingussie once it got there.
