Carers play a vital role in our communities, providing support and help to people who need it. In the last few years, it has become even more apparent how important they are, and their selflessness means others can live with purpose.

Highland Heroes 2023 will be presenting an award to the carer of the year and we are inviting you to nominate a carer in your community.

The carer of the year will be an individual who cares for a loved one and who has made personal sacrifices in order to tend to the needs of others.

NOMINATE at www.hnmedia.co.uk/highlandheroes by midnight, January 6, 2023.

Sponsoring the award for carer of the year is Inverness-based marketing agency, Adder Business Solutions.

Our work experience reporter, Jessica Fulton spoke to managing director of Adder Business Solutions, about why she has decided to sponsor the carer of the year category.

Managing director, Abbie McCahill, said: “There are so many people in our community who really go above and beyond to help others. Whether they’re in a paid position or in the third sector, they are so deserving of recognition. Without these heroes, the Highlands wouldn’t be the place it is.

“I’ve had a really brief experience in the care sector – albeit years ago now – and I completely understand how hard it is.

“Often, caring for someone with a disability can seem to be the ultimate ‘thankless task’ and I wanted to jump at the opportunity to be part of recognising people in these roles for the incredible work they carry out every day of the week.

“This is a chance for all of us within the Highland community to come together and show our heroes how much we respect them and how grateful we are to them for what they bring to the table. Whether they’re in paid or voluntary roles, I think it’s fair to say we’d be lost without them!”

Sponsored once again by Inverness Airport, Highland Heroes feature 14 categories where you can nominate individuals or groups in your community who you feel have gone above and beyond to support and care for others.

The categories are:

  • Primary pupil
  • Primary teacher
  • Secondary pupil
  • Secondary teacher
  • School of the year
  • Brave child
  • Carer
  • Fundraiser
  • Charitable organisation
  • Emergency services/armed forces hero
  • Healthcare hero
  • Volunteer
  • Community champion
  • Green hero

Once all of your nominations are in, our judging panel will create a shortlist for you to vote for your Highland Heroes of 2023!

There is also a very special accolade which will be presented at the awards ceremony at the Macdonald Drumossie Hotel, Inverness on Friday March 10, 2023. The hero of heroes will be decided by our judges from all of the winners at the ceremony and revealed on the night!
