A woman working to make sure as many homes in the Highlands as possible are being put to the best use is in the running for a national award in recognition of her achievements.

Highland empty homes officer Dawn Meston has been named among the finalists for the special recognition award at the 13th Scottish Empty Homes Awards.

Dawn works for Highland Council.

The awards are the centrepiece of the annual Scottish Empty Homes Conference, which is taking place in Glasgow this week.

The conference, held on the theme of Learning from the Past – Visions for the Future, will consider the successes in empty homes work to date and look to the future of its role in addressing Scotland’s housing issues.

Dawn has only been in the empty homes sector for less than a year but has hit the ground running and has already achieved a significant amount of success in the role according to those who are backing her award nomination.

With the role having been empty for a long time before she stepped in, Dawn was greeted with a large caseload which they say she has worked through with hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude.

Among the many highlights of her time as an empty homes officer, Dawn has worked tirelessly to advocate for empty homes work within the local authority and to make hundreds of owners of empty homes aware of their options for dealing with the property in the best way.

The Scottish Empty Homes Partnership has enjoyed working with Dawn, thanks her for her contribution to empty homes work in Scotland, and wishes her, and all finalists, the best of luck for the awards.

Lisa Borthwick, Scottish Empty Homes Partnership national manager, said:

“Dawn is a talented, committed, and inspirational housing professional who has made a significant contribution to empty homes work in Scotland.

“Our annual awards, the highlight of our conference, are our chance to recognise the great successes that have happened in empty homes in Scotland and Dawn is a brilliant example of someone leading this work.”

And she added: “I look forward to welcoming all of our great finalists to Glasgow for our awards and conference and to celebrating their achievements.”
