Highland Council chief executive Donna Manson will leave the local authority in February, the local authority has confirmed.

Leading councillors have been paying tribute to her time in office during what was described as “a period of immense change and challenge.”

Convener Bill Lobban said: “Donna has done a tremendous job for the Highland Council in the most difficult and challenging of circumstances and I personally wish her well in taking up her new position with Devon County Council."

While council leader Raymond Bremner said: “Donna has been key to Highland Council delivering many successful outcomes and achievements during her time with us and I’d like to wish her all the very best in her new post with Devon County Council.”

Her departure is likely to create something of a headache for the local authority as she will leave in February – the month before the budget is set.

That is usually a time of frantic work by the political leadership and officers and is overseen by the chief executive to ensure that statutory duties are met.

Since 2018 her hallmark has been the corporate vision to develop an “ambitious, sustainable, and connected” for the Highlands.

Mrs Manson also led the council staff during the Covid response and the recovery and impacts of Brexit as well as acting as Returning Officer for UK and Scottish Government and local authority elections.
