Higher delivery charges for far north a ‘fundamental injustice’, says Jamie Stone
Jamie Stone is urging the UK government to act over the “fundamental injustice” of higher delivery charges in the far north.
He described some charges as “extortionate” and declared: “No-one should be punished for where they live.”
The Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross raised the matter in parliament and asked the government to find a solution.
Reasons given for higher costs include longer distances and lower delivery volumes, making it more expensive for couriers.
Mr Stone asked the Leader of the House of Commons, Lucy Powell, for a debate on the issue. She replied that she would raise it with ministers and provide a full response.

“My constituents in the Highlands face delivery charges that are far higher than those living in Edinburgh or Glasgow,” Mr Stone said later. “This is a fundamental injustice.
“I’m glad the Leader of the House agreed with me that this is wrong, and rightly pointed out that often those living in remote areas of the UK rely on deliveries the most.
“I look forward to receiving a consideration from the government on this issue.”
