High Life Highland says it will donate around £10,000 to support the people of Ukraine as it backed a bid for a weekend of action.

Highland Council announced plans for the Weekend of Action for Ukraine last week, and High Life Highland (HLH) says it will welcomes the idea.

The charity will donate its takings from all locations including cafés, leisure centres and libraries from April 2-3 to help the people of Ukraine.

Chair of HLH Ian Ross said: “We have all looked on in astonishment and horror as the events in Ukraine have unfolded over the last number of days and can only imagine what the Ukranian people are going through.

“We have become aware that financial aid to the people is becoming increasingly vital, therefore High Life Highland welcomes the initiative announced by Highland Council to have a weekend of fundraising action across Highland to support Ukraine.

“Despite the very sad circumstances in which I do this, I am pleased to announce that all HLH sites will participate in the Highland Weekend of Action for Ukraine and will donate all takings from across our sites on April 2-3 to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal for Ukraine, likely to be around £10,000.

"We will also be inviting customers to make cash donations during their visits over the weekend to further add to HLH’s contribution.”

High Life Highland’s chief executive, Steve Walsh, added: “It is truly heartbreaking to watch the images from Ukraine as we literally watch a war happening live on our TV’s. I know only too well what devastation they will be experiencing as they try to survive the situation.

“I have been approached by a number of staff who were keen to see High Life Highland doing something to support the cause. So the initiative announced by Highland Council that will see the public, private and third sector working across Highland communities to help those most in need certainly received our wholehearted support.

“Knowing that financial aid is now the priority, it has been inspirational to see high-profile people like Andy Murray step up and donate all his 2022 prize money to the cause. So I am delighted and honoured that the board members, management, staff, volunteers and customers of High Life Highland will be able to play a very small part in the Highland Weekend of Action for Ukraine.”

The weekend of action was agreed upon by the council during an emergency meeting on March 10.

They encourage staff, the public and private sector and the community to take part.
