Help clean up Wick and keep it green with planned litter picking bonanza
A selfless group of volunteers is looking for some helping hands for a planned series of litter pick days through Wick.
The Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council (RBWCC), Wick Development Trust (WDT) and Wick Paths Group (WPG) have combined forces for a litter picking bonanza that forms part of a national initiative called Spring Clean Scotland 2022.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage individuals and groups to organise to clean their own communities with the hope of making Scotland a litter free nation.
There are four big litter picks planned for the town during the campaign:
- WPG meet at Caberfeidh Court on south side of Wick at 10am Sunday, March 27. Areas around Grizzly Park and South Head of Wick will be cleaned.
- WDT meet at Old Swimming Pool at 10am on Sunday, April 3. Cleaning around Lower Pulteney, town centre, lanes and harbour area.
- RBWCC meet at car park behind Sutherland Brothers at 10am on Sunday, April 10. Cleaning around Industrial Estate and airport forest area.
- RBWCC, WPG and WDT combine forces and meet up at Riverside Car park opposite the Norseman Hotel at 10am on Sunday, April 17 to clean along roads leading into the town.
Individuals are also invited to do their own litter picks at any time – please take a photo of what you have collected and send it to the RBWCC Facebook page.
The community council said that if you haven’t got time to organise a full event "you can still do your bit by doing a two minute clean-up near you" and it also posted some tips.
"Why not nip out in the morning, in your lunch break, or in the evening and pick up whatever you can. Its easy:
- Grab a bag (a plastic bag for life will do)
- Get outdoors and pick up any littered items you find (remember to be safe and use gloves and a picker if you have one)
- Take a quick photo showing what you have collected and RBWCC will promote your efforts and encourage others to join in
"If we all work together we can make a difference to our community."
