A GROUP of generous holidaymakers from across the Atlantic have dug deep to donate a four figure sum to the RNLI in Caithness.

Wick Lifeboat crew and supporters were left pleasantly surprised when 40 tourists from the United States who were staying at Ackergill Tower, gave £2000 to the branch during the Wick Lifeboat Harbour Day last weekend.

The event, which drew hundreds of visitors to the quayside, raised almost £9000.

Wick Lifeboat operations manager Bruce Tait said they were delighted with the success of the day and the generosity of the public.

“The total raised is close to £9000, which is a tremendous contribution towards our RNLI fundraising efforts for the running of Wick lifeboat, and also a great reflection on the continued generosity of the local community,” he said.

“This figure includes a very generous donation of £2000 from a group of 40 holidaymakers from America who were staying at Ackergill Tower during the week prior.

“The flotilla of visiting boats who responded to the invitation to attend also contributed greatly to the day, by taking part in the various activities for the entertainment of the public, who turned out in good numbers despite the inclement weather.”
