Volunteers from Caithness Cats Protection got into the Halloween spirit when they joined forces with Pets@Home in Wick and raised more than £200 for the charity, writes Joan Campbell.

Carole Rouse, Caithness Cats Protection (CCP) fundraising team leader, said: “We are so grateful to Pets@Home staff for their support. They ensured everything ran smoothly with such a good atmosphere throughout the store. It’s encouraging to have so much support for the needs of our cats.”

Support for the charity from customers drew an interest in two of the most urgent needs of the branch. Deirdre Campbell, CCP co-ordinator, emphasised how important it is to recruit new volunteers.

“We urgently need volunteers to do TNR work,” she said. “Trap, neuter, and return cats is an essential part of our work. The help this gives a community who are aware of feral cats in their midst – many suffering from over and inter breeding – cannot be emphasised enough. The value to the people, and especially to the cats, when a volunteer takes on this feline welfare work is a much appreciated way to serve a community.”

She added: “We really do need more kitten fosterers, too. It is so rewarding to see the joy on the faces of a family, or anyone who wants to give a cat a home, when they collect that precious pet you have personally cared for.” Anybody interested can contact CCP at enquiries@caithness.cats.org.uk

Meanwhile, people are being invited to find out more about jobs in cat welfare.

A series of online talks during Scottish Careers Week is being aimed at learners from aged 11 upwards.

Cats Protection is running eight live events during the week (November 13-19) with employees from around the feline welfare charity offering an insight into the variety of jobs it offers. Classes, groups, and individuals can sign up to the morning and afternoon live events.

The live streams include talks by the veterinary team, who will talk about how their work shapes the way cats are cared for; the advocacy team, which works to influence politicians and policy makers to create a better world for cats; and the retail team, which runs the charity’s shop chain that raises vital money to support cats in need.

Cats Protection’s Scottish community education officer Alison Cameron-Russell said: “We aim to help students to better understand the job market and how they can develop their strengths to be successful in developing their careers.”

More information can be found at www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/cats-protections-education-team-58533475123. The events are all free, but each event must be booked separately through Eventbrite.
