Halkirk set to join fuel discount scheme

John Thurso welcomed the possible inclusion of Halkirk on the fuel discount scheme.

HALKIRK is one of seven new areas in the Highlands and Islands which could be included in a fuel discount scheme.

It has been named as one of locations on an application to the European Commission. Halkirk is the only one in Caithness.

Ten other mainland areas were identified in October last year, bringing the total to 17.

Local MP John Thurso was pleased Halkirk had been included and said, if the application is approved, it would mean the cost of fuel would be 5p a litre less there than it would normally be.

“I am delighted Halkirk is on the list as running a car in remote areas can be such a big part of the cost of living,” said the Lib Dem MP.

A final decision on the application is expected later this year.
