Pupils at Halkirk Primary School have earned a place in the final of a Scotland-wide competition after demonstrating their in-depth knowledge of Europe.

The team of P6 children came out on top in the Highland heats of the Euroquiz challenge, with their teacher describing it as “an amazing achievement”.

Euroquiz is an annual project open to all P6 pupils in Scotland. It is run by the Scottish European Educational Trust and heats are organised in each local authority area.

Quiz topics include geography and history, languages, culture and general knowledge.

This is the first year Halkirk has entered the competition and all the P6 pupils have enjoyed learning about Europe as their class topic.

The team – Hamish Brierley, Kayleigh MacDonald, Ella Simpson and Adam Waller, along with Connor Forbes as reserve – worked hard to prepare for the quiz during lunchtime revision sessions with their teacher, Erin Gunn. They also did independent work at home.

In the Highland heats, Halkirk achieved a score of 50/60. That meant they came joint first with Farr Primary School, Inverness, leading to a nail-biting head-to-head.

Halkirk scored an impressive 9/10, then had an anxious wait for the final results. The pupils were thrilled when it was announced that they had taken first place in the Highland heats.

The Scottish final will be held at the Scottish Parliament in June and the whole school will be cheering on the Halkirk team as they compete for the national Euroquiz trophy.

Miss Gunn said: “I am very, very proud of all five children. They have worked incredibly hard and have taken on the challenge of revising for some very challenging and broad topics.

“I am delighted that their effort and hard work has been recognised and rewarded. It’s an amazing achievement and it is credit to their commitment over the past few months.”
