It states: "We urge all drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful when out and about in these wintry conditions. Side roads are hard packed with slush on them and some black ice about. Treatment ongoing on roads and footpaths are very slippery. No other issues reported."

As of 9am today there are 4 secondary schools, 27 primary schools and 21 nursery schools closed or partially closed across the region including Halkirk Primary which has no water/heating/power.

The UK Met Office has a Yellow weather warning which has been extended until 11.59pm on Friday for snow and ice for much of the Highland region.

Met Office says what to expect:

  • There is a chance that bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times, especially during the morning peak travel period
  • There is a fair chance of some travel delays on roads, plus a smaller chance of stranded vehicles and passengers in some areas, particularly over high ground during the morning
  • There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
  • A chance that untreated pavements and cycle paths are icy , increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries
