Halkirk musician writes Dons cup final song
GAVIN Simpson has been a lifelong Aberdeen fan, but never dared dream he would be one day helping in the club’s preparations for a Scottish Cup final.
However, that is exactly what the Caithness exile has done by creating the Dons’ Scottish Cup final song, which he hopes will inspire them to win the competition on Saturday for the first time since 1990.
The Sheep are on Fire was inspired by the chant sung around the terraces of Pittodrie in recent years and which has become a favourite with the Red Army.
The 35-year-old native of Halkirk, who goes under the name Sourfish, entered the song in a competition which he won and was invited to take part in a song-writing seminar.
Inspired by the positive feedback he received, the Edinburgh-based musician sent his song to Pittodrie.

“The whole thing came together by chance,” he said.
“My friends and I were talking nonsense about if we wrote a cup final song what would it sound like.
“So I played around and came up with a song really quickly from a simple chant. After taking part in the seminar, I decided to send the song to the club.
“The club got back in touch and said they really liked it and they said they would be up for releasing it as their cup final song.
“I met with the marketing guys and they were keen to do the cover artwork with the mascot and it has received a good response.”
The song is available to download on iTunes and all money raised will go towards Aberdeen Football Club Community Trust.
Trust chief executive Ally Prockter said the song is a hit.
He said: “The excitement is really beginning to build ahead of the Scottish Cup final and The Sheep are on Fire is the perfect song to get all Aberdeen supporters in the mood for this big match.
“We’re delighted Gavin has written such a fantastic song and kindly agreed to help raise funds for the AFC Community Trust.”
Mr Simpson said he hopes his song can inspire the Dons to victory.
“In my head they’d be inviting me into the changing room to play it, but I’m sure their minds will be focused on the game.”
