The nation’s favourite motorbike-riding chefs, the Hairy Bikers, are fronting the MS Society’s sweetest fundraiser of the year and are challenging people in the north to get baking.

A special café-break event will take place nationwide on October 4, 2019, to raise awareness and funds for the MS Society charity.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating condition that affects 11,000 people in Scotland which damages nerves in your body and makes it harder to do everyday things, like walk, talk, eat and think.

A Caithness MS Society has long been in place to help sufferers living in the county offering weekly group meetings in both Wick and Thurso while offering counselling services via Skype and telephone for those living in more remote areas.

The Hairy Bikers, Si King and Dave Myers, have been keen supporters of the MS Society with the charity having a special place in Dave's heart.

When he was eight years old, Dave's mum was diagnosed with MS. Of that time he said: "Within two years Mum was in a wheelchair and Dad and I became full-time carers.

"It was hard going. Back then there was hardly any support for people affected by MS. But I do remember the MS Society opened so many doors for me as a young lad and my family – it made our lives just that bit better.

"There’s been a great deal of work done to support those with MS, but there’s so much more we can do and we need to raise as much money as possible. And what better way to get a slice of the action than by hosting a Cake Break? Go on, grab a brew and share your bakes with your mates."

Whether you’re an expert baker or planning to pop to the supermarket for some ready-made treats, raising any kind of dough could make a big difference – it doesn’t even need to be on October 4 if you have an alternative date that will have a better chance for many to attend and whisk up support for the MS Society.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll be sent a flan-tastic Cake Break fundraising pack. Inside you’ll find exclusive recipes from the Hairy Bikers themselves, as well as decorations, a collection box and cake-inspired games to help you spread the word – just don’t forget to share your Cake Breaks on social media using #CakeBreak2019.

Morna Simpkins, Director of MS Society Scotland, said: "We’re incredibly honoured to have the Hairy Bikers supporting this year’s Cake Break, and have no doubt they will inspire bikers, bakers and novices everywhere to host their own Cake Breaks across the country.

"Over 11,000 people live with MS in Scotland, and by organising a Cake Break you’ll be raising vital funds for everyone affected by the condition. We believe we can stop MS, but we can’t do it without you."
