Pupils have been evacuated from Thurso High School because of damage to a gym roof.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “Thurso High School closed this afternoon [Thursday] due to structural damage to its gym roof.

"As a precaution, the school followed an emergency evacuation procedure and pupils were sent home.

"There is ongoing activity to secure the site and an update on the reopening of the school will be communicated to parents and carers through the usual communication channels.”

Under the heading "School closure", a post on the school's Facebook page at lunchtime said: "Due to unforeseen damage to the Gym 1 roof which has caused unstable debris we have no option but to close the school.

"Town and bus pupils will be evacuated with immediate effect following the normal evacuation procedures."

A further post confirmed that the school will remain closed to pupils on Friday, adding: "College pupils should attend college as usual, and work will be posted for all pupils online."

It is hoped the school will be open on Monday.
