‘GUTTED’ - Wick woman’s woe after screws and nails flatten her tyres

A Wick woman was dumbfounded when she prepared to take a drive, finding three tyres flat to the ground in an apparent act of vandalism.

The woman, who wishes to be anonymous, said she thought it was quite unusual to be targeted by vandals on the quiet street where she lives, Broadhaven Road.

Three of the tyres were completely flat and replacing them proved costly.

“It’s quite a decent street, and it’s quiet enough,” she said.

“There’s quite a lot of police living in the area, too, so it’s pretty unusual.”

On Saturday morning, her son dropped one of his sisters off at her work, and when she decided to drive it herself, he warned her that the tyres were very low to the ground.

“I said they’re fine and drove over to work but on the way back it felt unusual. When I got home, I had a look and saw all three of them were flat. When I took a closer look, there were screws and nails in all three.”

She thinks there could be up to seven screws and nails piercing the tyres and doubts if they were accidentally picked up by driving over them on the street.

“I have no idea how they would have got there, as I go to the same places all the time and never anywhere unusual. A lot of people pick up one nail in their tyre, but all three?”

She says that though she believes it is very unlikely that the screw and nails could have accidentally been picked up, she cannot think of anyone who would have a reason to target her or any member of the family.

“My partner sent off for three tyres and got it fixed this morning. It cost a lot of money. I’m absolutely gutted about it.

“It’s got us really worried, so we’ve upped the security a lot and put up cameras.”

Despite three tyres being flattened by around seven screws and nails, the woman said she felt that there was “not enough proof” to say it was definitely vandalism and therefore did not report the matter to the police.

Nevertheless, she and her family hope the improved security will help protect the car from criminal intent in the future.
