A sporting estate in north-west Sutherland is holding an open day later this month to tell people about the conservation work it undertakes and the work it does to improve properties and places.

Grosvenor’s Reay Forest Estate will welcome members of the public to the open day at Achfary Hall on April 20 from 10am-4pm. The event is free to attend and no booking is required.

Estate staff will be on hand to showcase the projects taking place on the estate including Project Laxford which aims to restore wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout populations in the River Laxford. The estate has linked with the Atlantic Salmon Trust to take this project forward.

Information will also be available on the estate’s deer management and forestry activities as well as careers in rural estates and philanthropy through the Westminster Foundation.

Visitors will be able to hear from the estate’s partner organisations, such as Wildlife Estates Scotland and Countryside Learning Scotland, as well as local businesses.

Soup and sweet will be available at £5 per adult and £3 for children (under fives free), with all proceeds going to the estate’s adopted charity High Life Highland.

A separate schools event will take place earlier in the week and is expected to attract more than 100 pupils from nearby secondary and primary schools in Kinlochbervie, Gairloch, Ullapool, Durness, Scourie and Lochinver.

The last open days were held in May 2022 when 126 pupils from across Sutherland as well as 150 people on the public open day visited the Reay Forest, learning more about how Grosvenor is delivering a lasting economic, social and environmental benefit through its activities.
