A TEAM of selfless volunteers got together to tidy up Latheron Cemetery and freshen up pathways for mourners visiting their dearly departed.

Caithness civic leader Willie Mackay was one of the team who worked over several weeks to upgrade the scenic cemetery by the sea. He said: "I am proud of the volunteers that came along to help tidy up the cemetery.

"The volunteers have not only done a fantastic amount of work on Latheron but also the cemeteries at Keiss, Wick and Thrumster."

The community councils from Berriedale and Dunbeath together with Lybster, Latheron and Clyth thanked all the volunteers, contractors and councillors for "their assistance in refurbishing Latheron Cemetery".

A special thanks was given to Gunn's contractors from Lybster for delivering four loads of stone chippings and donating scalpings free of charge. James and Michael Mackay, of Mackay Builders, were thanked by the local community council for supplying plant and machinery to get the 120 tons of chips spread and rolled.

Other volunteers helped out using their own mowers, strimmers, diggers, quad bikes, trailers and rakes to finish the job.

The civic leader said: "Gunn's have worked with the volunteers from the start and are to be admired for this wonderful contribution the construction and civil engineering contractors have made to the community."
