A Douglas DC-3 heading to northern France for this week’s D-Day 75th anniversary commemorations stopped off at Wick John O’Groats Airport – where it was photographed alongside another grand old warplane, a Catalina.

Both aircraft had called in at Wick for refuelling, survival equipment hire and crew rest.

The Catalina was heading to the USA, while the DC-3 had come the other way – flying over from America to help mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings by performing in “Daks over Normandy”.

This is being billed as a once-in-a-lifetime event in which the skies will be filled with Douglas DC-3/C-47 Dakotas and hundreds of paratroopers. More than 30 DC-3/C-47s are coming together from around the globe during the period June 2-9.
