People are being invited to give their views on how transport can be improved in the Highlands and Islands.

HiTrans, the transport partnership for the region, is running a public consultation to consider how transport within the region and to and from other areas of Scotland can be developed over the next 20 years.

The consultation, which runs until May 8, is part of the partnership's statutory duty to produce a regional transport strategy which covers the Highlands, Moray, Western Isles, Orkney, and most of the Argyll and Bute local authority areas.

Stage one of the three-stage process is to establish a Case for Change, identifying the transport challenges in such a large and rural area and how they can be addressed.

An important part of the process is to seek comments and feedback from the public and other organisations.

The next stage will involve developing and appraising a set of options that help resolve the transport and associated issues identified and deliver the strategy objectives.

The results will then be developed into a final strategy.

Ranald Robertson, director of Hitrans, urged people to get involved.

"The Regional Transport Strategy aims to deliver connectivity across the region which enables sustainable economic growth and helps communities to actively participate in economic and social activities," he said.

"The strategy will guide our priorities for action and spending over forthcoming years.

"Consulting the public is a vital element of the process and I would encourage as many people as possible to respond to the Case for Change."

An online survey, created by consultants, Stantec, will remain open for comments until 5pm on Monday, May 8.

It can be found at hitranscaseforchange.survey.

Those responding must be 16 years of age or over.

Anyone needing help completing the questionnaire, should email HITRANS@stantec.com.
