CAITHNESS, Sutherland and Ross MSP Rob Gibson is deeply honoured and excited about being nominated for the convenership of the rural affairs, climate change and environment committee.

Mr Gibson said the role is a privilege and one he will carry out with dedication and vigour.

He said the subjects which the committee covers are very important for the lives of people in the North.

Mr Gibson identified scrutiny of land reform legislation as a major issue for the committee to deal with alongside farming and fishing, the issue of the Crown Estate and climate change.

"Land reform is in desperate need of scrutiny – the committee will play a vital role in that. It is a subject that has long been close to my heart, so I will relish the opportunity to look into how it works and what changes are needed," he said.

"Preparing the ground for climate change implementation is vitally important, we must make sure that every aspect of the cause and effect are investigated. This could prove to be the most important work we do for the future.

"However, I want to see rural areas and the people who live in them reach their potential. This has been one of my guiding principles in politics – the committee is important at taking the temperature of rural areas and trying to help those who are in it. I look forward to that."
