Police Scotland Highland and Islands reported on social media: "Officers are in attendance at a gas leak in Wick which was reported around 8.50am this morning.

"A cordon has been put in place. Thurso Street, Thurso Road, Bankhead, Newton Road and Kenneth Street are all closed and we would ask people to avoid the area. Enquiries are ongoing."

Local man Derek Bremner saw a "bubbling hole" at the corner of Barbara Place and Thurso Road and said that fire services and police were in attendance along with gas workers.
