A CHARITY is launching a funding scheme to support young Scottish traditional musicians and is especially looking for applications from the far north.
The Friends of Highland Music (FoHM) Youth Fund is open for applications until August 31from people aged up to 23 and based in the Highlands or Western Isles.
Moira Leslie, chair of FoHM, said: “We exist to promote traditional music skills in their many forms from fiddle to clarsach, to Gaelic and Scots song and step dancing. We want to encourage more young people to come to us for support to develop and maintain those skills in fun and creative ways.
"This fund can help with fees for tuition and residential courses, but we would welcome applications for more innovative projects, from individuals and groups alike. This is a first for us, and so is very much a pilot scheme, but if successful, we hope to repeat it.”
Ms Leslie added that it had been a number of years since a grant application had been received from a traditional musician in Caithness or Sutherland so applications from these areas are "especially welcomed".
FoHM have given support to traditional musicians for many years but this is the first time it has created a fund specifically targeting young people.
Grants will be given towards meeting the costs related to advancing the applicant’s knowledge, experience and development in the field of Scottish traditional music, song and dance.
Youth Fund 2019/20 grants can be applied for between now and August 31, 2019.
Application forms and conditions can be found on the FoHM website: www.friends-of-highland-music.org
Membership of the FoHM costs £10 (family) or £5 (individual) annually.
