HUNDREDS of visitors to Wick town centre enjoyed a day of family fun in the sunshine at the weekend.

The first Wick Spring Fun Day took place on Saturday, aiming to introduce visitors as well as local residents to what is available in the town.

Organised by the Caithness Chamber of Commerce with the help of several businesses, the event promoted shops, restaurants and bars and had something for everyone.

Chamber of Commerce chief executive Trudy Morris told the John O’Groat Journal the fun day has been hailed by the organisers as a success and there are already plans to make it an annual event.

“It was a tremendous group effort from everyone involved and one of our aims is for the business community to work together to stage promotional events such as these,” she said.

“After a quiet start in the morning, it picked up towards lunch time and by early afternoon the place was packed.

“A number of businesses in the town had special offers throughout the day and the general feedback from them was that they received a good response during the event.

“As well as putting on an entertaining day, it was a way of getting people into the town centre and making them aware of what is available, which will hopefully encourage them to buy locally more often.”

The fun started in the morning when the shops laid on a host of special offers and organised special events such as raffles, food-and-drink tasting and fashion style advice.

In the afternoon magician Gary Lynch delighted the audience with his range of magical tricks and some celebrities were seen wandering around with the likes of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Peppa Pig meeting and greeting some of their fans in Caithness.

Members of the Wick RBLS Pipe Band played in Market Square to kick off the afternoon’s proceedings and were accompanied by performers from the Elise Lyall School of Dance.

The Thurso High School Band also made a trip from the west of the county to entertain the crowd while students Craig Wares and Joanna Harper performed a duet.

There was also a special country music performance from Martyn Campbell, Alex Calder, Robbie McArthur, Damon Christie, Joanna Harper and Kirsty Rollinson, who had all appeared at the Northern Nashville Caithness Country Music Festival last month.
