NHS staff and frontline workers who have lost their lives in the fight against coronavirus were remembered at an event in Thurso.

Their loss was acknowledged by Thurso and Wick Trade Union Council as part of the International Workers' Memorial Day commemoration on Tuesday.

Trade union council chairman Davie Alexander said: "The memorial was especially poignant this year as there was also a recognition of all NHS staff and frontline workers who have sadly lost their lives during the current crisis."

He added: "International Workers' Memorial Day is always an important date in the trade union calendar. The memorial has taken on extra significance this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Due to the social distancing requirements, we were unable to meet as a group. However, branch secretary John Deighan made sure that the day was commemorated.

"John managed to put together some banners and logos of some of the affiliated unions, and these were displayed in his garden."

Mr Deighan said: "It is important we should remember colleagues that have sadly lost their lives over the years. We would also like to sincerely thank all NHS staff and other frontline workers who are putting their own lives at risk fighting this terrible crisis."

People all over the UK took part in a minute's silence at 11am on Tuesday to commemorate all health and care workers who have lost their lives to the coronavirus.
