Wick-born Elizabeth Christina McDonald celebrated her 100th birthday on Friday at her home in Edinburgh.

A gazebo had been set up in the garden, allowing and family and friends to come at different times bringing gifts. Neighbours cheered as the birthday card from the Queen arrived.

Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Christina Bain on October 30, 1920 – the daughter of Elizabeth Christina Bain of Dempster Street, daughter of George Rennie Bain and Jane Bain (née Sutherland).

In the 1930s, as Betty Bain, she was well known for her prowess in Highland dancing, and won many medals.

In 1944 Elizabeth married James Carlisle, who had recently moved to Wick after escaping from Singapore. He was manager of the sand factory at Shaltigoe. They lived at 17 Loch Street. She gave birth to son, Hamish, and daughters Kathleen and Fionna in Wick.

In 1950 the factory closed and the family moved to Kent where Ailsa was born. The family then moved again, this time to Edinburgh. James died in 1963.

Elizabeth remarried in 1971, to Joseph McDonald. He passed away recently. She continues to live in Edinburgh in her own home.

Fionna, a highly regarded artist, did a special painting showing her mother, Fionna herself and Fionna's partner, John, enjoying a fish supper down the coast at Prestonpans.

Hamish said the birthday celebrations had gone well. He said: "It was sunny and the rain stayed off most of the day. Everyone was in good cheer and amazed at the hundred-year-old Betty looking so well."
