A fresh plea has gone out for volunteers and local businesses to get involved in the running of Wick’s community market.

The monthly market in the town centre is operated by a subgroup of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council and the organiser is Allan Farquhar, the community council vice-chairman.

He says the venture can play an important part in town centre regeneration.

The next market will be on Saturday, April 8, during Easter weekend, and every second Saturday in the month thereafter.

"In addition to background music, we hope to bring live music back to the town centre on market day afternoons," Mr Farquhar said this week.

"Pitches are available to micro or small businesses and worthy causes.

"We really need some assistance from volunteers and/or local businesses to form a committee to run the market and manage this not-for-profit venture to the benefit of our town centre rejuvenation.

"Please contact us for pitches or information on our market."

Anyone willing to help can get in touch through the Wick Community Market Facebook page or by emailing secretary@wickcommunitycouncil.com

Mr Farquhar issued a similar call for support in September last year. Speaking at that time, he said: “We're beginning to see now that it does take people into the town. The town centre is definitely busier during the market days.

"We're confident that, as it grows, it will attract more of those that pass through the town on the North Coast 500 route to stop off and spend their time and money on our heritage and produce."
