FORMER Wick High School teacher Allan Abernethy received a card from the Queen on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

Mr Abernethy enjoyed a special afternoon tea in Mackays Hotel, Wick, along with family and friends.

Son Bill said: "The birthday weekend could not have gone better. Dad was really touched by all the best wishes, gifts and many cards he received."

Friends attended the celebration from all over the country with family coming from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayr and even as far a field as Ticehurst, East Sussex, and Guildford in Surrey.

Mr Abernethy, who was born on September 22, 1919, was amazed by the reaction to the Mackays Hotel post on Facebook which received 50 comments and 400 likes.

He was a physical education teacher in Wick for almost 30 years, and a keen golfer.
