A sheriff has ordered a Wick man who bombarded his former partner with abusive texts on Facebook Messenger to pay her £500 compensation.

Darren Cogill (32) was also made subject to a non-harassment order banning him from having any contact with Mandy More.

Wick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that the couple had parted after a four-year relationship.

Fiscal David Barclay said that the split had been "acrimonious".

Coghill, who was living in Wick at the time, sent his ex the series of unwelcome messages on October 6, last year.

Mr Barclay said that some of the texts were inoffensive but other comments were coloured with "some different comments".

Coghill, now living in Mallard Brae, Ladywell, Livingston, admitted to police that his conduct had been inappropriate.

Mr Barclay added that the accused's relationship was at an end and there was no prospect of it being rekindled.

Coghill, a machine operator, admitted having behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear or alarm by repeatedly sending Ms More offensive messages.

He is currently subject to an unpaid work order imposed for an unrelated offence.

It has 140 hours to run and has been transferred to Livingston.
