Wick's former job centre building is to go under the hammer next week in an online auction.

The disused building in Girnigoe Street is being sold by SDL Auctions in its first national property auction, featuring lots from throughout Britain.

The former job centre is a 15,000 sq ft property "with the potential for a number of different uses", according to SDL Auctions.

The company suggests it could be suitable for conversion into a care facility, a hotel or residential accommodation, with the necessary planning permission.

The property, part of which has two storeys, has a guide price of £60,000 plus.

The auction will be live-streamed from SDL Auctions’ head office. Bids can be placed remotely by phone, by proxy or over the internet.

Commercial valuer Chris Theocharides said: “This is an excellent opportunity to invest in a location which has not just road and rail links but air and sea links too. Wick John O’Groats Airport is less than a mile from the property, and there are nearby ferry terminals.

“Whether the buyer of this property is looking for office accommodation or to develop the site into something new, this is a fabulous location.

"The town has dramatic castle remains and fascinating heritage as a former Viking settlement, attracting tourists from far and wide.”

The former job centre is the most northerly property to be sold by SDL Auctions.

The company decided to continue holding auctions during the lockdown period, changing to a new model with auctions live-streamed so that social distancing can be maintained. In March, some 1850 people watched the company’s three auctions on the internet and £7.1 million was raised for sellers, with properties selling for an average of 15 per cent above their guide prices.

The former job centre is among more than 110 lots including houses, flats, commercial investments and land being auctioned on Thursday, April 30, from 10.30am.

Mr Theocharides added: “We are delighted that so many people have trusted us to sell their properties for them in our April auction. This confirms our belief that we are providing a vital service for those who simply cannot wait for the crisis to pass.”
