Former housekeeper at Castle of Mey dies at the age of 86





The funeral of a former housekeeper at the Castle of Mey takes place on Friday. June Webster, who was 86, died at the Caithness General hospital in Wick on February 25.

She and her late husband, Sandy, worked at the castle for many years when it was the Caithness home of the Queen Mother.

Mrs Webster, who lived in Mey after she retired, received the Royal Victorian Medal (RVM) for service to the Royal family. Her husband also was awarded the RVM.

A spokeswoman for the Castle of Mey Trust described Mrs Webster as "a dedicated and loyal housekeeper to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother" and stressed that "during her long service showed unwavering support for the Castle of Mey and those who worked there."

The spokeswoman added: "She worked alongside her late husband Sandy Webster RVM (retired Head Gardener). After retiring June and Sandy moved to their home in the village of Mey where June continued her support by becoming a Friend of the Castle of Mey, always taking a great interest in how it developed into a major tourist attraction while always maintaining a strong nod to the past.

"June will be greatly missed within the Castle community."

She and Sandy are survived by their son and daughter, Alec and Norma and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs Webster's funeral service takes place in Canisbay Church.
