Former 'Groat' reporter Hamish Mackay is to stand in an Aberdeen City Council by-election.

HALKIRK-born journalist and community politician Hamish Mackay has announced he is entering the fray as an independent candidate in a key Aberdeen City Council by-election.

The 63-year-old, who grew up in Armadale, north Sutherland, has lived in Aberdeen for the past 43 years.

He will contest the Airyhall, Broomhill and Garthdee ward on Thursday, June 23, which was left vacant by Scott Cassie.

Mr Mackay is a former pupil of Farr, Bettyhill, and Dornoch Academy, and a journalism graduate from the University of Westminster, London.

He has been a journalist for the past 45 years – beginning his career on the John O’Groat Journal in Wick.

He subsequently joined ThePress and Journal in Aberdeen and, during a 25-year stint, rose to the position of acting news editor.

During the past 15 years he has run his own business in Aberdeen – Mackay Media Consultancy. He is a present and past member of a number of community and charitable bodies in Aberdeen and is a past chairman of Aberdeen Community Council Forum.
