A LARGE-scale version of an iconic symbol of the 1980s is on offer to those who want to own a piece of John O’Groats history.
The auction of a seven-feet-high piece of artwork resembling a Rubik’s cube will be one of the star attractions at this year’s John O’Groats Harbour Day.
The cube was made out of 12 doors from the John O’Groats House Hotel which was recently given an artistic external makeover as part of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise Transform event.
Artists involved with the project ripped out the doors from the hotel and created the cube as a place to store their art materials.
After the transformation of the exterior of the hotel was complete, the artists donated the cube to the harbour day committee.
Committee member Walter Mowat said that it is an unusual piece which he believes will generate a lot of interest.
“The Rubik’s cube is the last chance for the public to own a piece of John O’Groats’ most famous building,” he said.
The building will remain but is set to be redeveloped into luxury holiday apartments.
“The Rubik’s cube is something quite different for this year’s Harbour Day,” said Mr Mowat. “It will be sold off to the highest bidder during a charity auction and I think it would make a great addition to anyone’s home.
“This really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a unique piece of modern art.”
The John O’Groats Harbour Day has been running for over 20 years and has become one of the most popular events on the calendar.
The event will be compered by Caithness Courier columnist Keith Muir and will feature the Wick RBLS Pipe Band. Members of the Violet Leitch School of Dancing will also be performing.
A marquee has also been built featuring stalls with a wide of selection of crafts for sale. Traditional fayre games and a bouncy castle will offer something for all the family.
Thurso RNLI will also be present to give information on the work it does.
All money raised will go towards the John O’Groats Rifle Club, John O’Groats FC and the hall committee. The event takes place on Sunday between 1pm and 5pm.
