Valentine's Day: Five romantic spots in Caithness
It's Valentine's Day and while we can't travel too far from home during the current restrictions we can at least dream of being together with our loved one in one of these remarkable Caithness beauty spots!
Peedie Sands
A secluded beach is a perfect spot to spend some quality time together. Peedie Sands is tucked away on the western edge of Dunnet Head. After the short but steep walk up the headland from Dwarwick pier you'll be rewarded with a beautiful view with the clear waters of Dunnet Bay lapping against the pristine shoreline.
Geise Farm Woodland Trail
There is something about a fast-flowing waterfall that lifts the heart. This one can be found at the end of a footpath that winds through the trees on the Geise Farm Woodland Trail, between Thurso and Halkirk. It's a lovely spot for a romantic stroll, with a variety of habitat along the way and benches where you can sit together and enjoy the tranquillity of the Caithness countryside.
Stacks of Duncansby

A bracing walk along the windswept cliff-tops near John O'Groats is guaranteed to get the heart-rate going and you will enjoy cosying up together later with something warm and comforting. The Stacks of Duncansby are spectacular whatever the weather, although be aware that the coastal path is wet and boggy in places at certain times of the year.
Castle Sinclair Girnigoe
There can be few more romantic backdrops than an ancient castle... Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, near Wick, is one of the most spectacular ruins in the north of Scotland, perched on high cliffs overlooking the wide expanse of Sinclair's Bay. Sinclair Girnigoe was home to the earls of Caithness and the place is steeped in legend. What you see now are the ruins of the 17th-century layout.
Whaligoe Steps
Whaligoe is another secluded spot that will inspire anyone with a passion for the outdoors. Take care when walking down the 300-plus steps to a sheltered inlet at the foot of towering 250ft cliffs. In the 19th century, fishing boats used the landing area known as the Haven. Crews of hardy women would gut the fish and carry it all the way up the steps in baskets. Spare a thought for those ladies as you make your way – slowly – back up to the top!
