Three fire appliances are dealing with an incident at Melvich.

Gorse bushes on a hill adjacent to Melvich Terrace are ablaze.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received the call shortly after 1pm but no-one is available for comment at present.

The pictures were taken by Highland councillor Struan Mackie.

Two appliances from Thurso are said to be at the scene along with one from Lybster.

Earlier this month, Area Commander Bruce Farquharson of the SFRS stressed that Scotland’s countryside is vulnerable to fire.

He warned that a spate of wildfires could place unnecessary pressure on the emergency services as they already work to support partners and protect the public during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since then, the north – like much of the rest of the country – has seen an extended spell of dry, sunny weather.
