Film with double Wick link misses out on final Oscar short leet
A FILM, which a Caithness businessman helped fund, has missed out on making the final short leet for Oscar nominations.
Contrapelo was selected as one of the 10 entries in the best live action short film category but did not make the final five. The announcement was made in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Evan Anderson, who comes from Wick and is the group director of Edinburgh-based construction consultancy firm Blair Anderson, helped finance Contrapelo along with his business partner Stewart Blair. As a result they were named as executive producers of the film.
Contrapelo has another Wick connection as director Gareth Dunnet Alcocer is the son of Gavin Dunnet who is from the town but now lives in America.
Contrapelo tells the story of a proud Mexican barber who is forced to shave the leader of a drug cartel. As he faces the man who is destroying his country, he is confronted by a difficult decision: to become a killer, or to let this man continue to kill.

Although the film will not now win an Oscar it has already won awards at international festivals.
Anderson said just getting on to the list of 10 was an achievement in itself.
