Every year the local Labour Party makes an award to a pupil of Thurso High School in honour of a past member, Dounreay scientist and trades unionist Arthur Yates.

Arthur worked tirelessly for the party and famously told his wife and family that he did not want any memorial bench. Hence the shield, for the best student in modern studies.

The award has been made since 2004 and depute rector Craig Omand pointed out some of the 15 past winners who have gone on to become teachers, lawyers and vets.

This year’s winner is Niall Sinclair, nominated by his Higher modern studies teacher Julian McQuaker for endeavour in modern studies. Fifth-year student Niall gets to keep the shield or a year along with a certificate and an Amazon voucher, donated by local members.
