A north Sutherland community group has received a welcome Christmas funding boost.

Melvich Community SCIO has been gifted £2242 from the North West Sutherland Council for Community Action (NWSCCA).

Fundraising is ongoing towards a replacement play park at Portskerra.

A spokesman for the SCIO said: "A huge thanks to NWSCCA for selecting our charity to receive some funding."

Members have decided to ring-fence the cash boost for its play park sub-committee to use towards the new Portskerra play park.

"This funding will help our community move forward with getting a new play park," continued the spokesman.

A registered charity, the NWSCCA is in the process of winding up and has identified a number of local community groups to split its remaining funds between.

The organisation was the publishers of Am Bratach – Gaelic for The Flag – an independent monthly news magazine covering north-west Sutherland.

Am Bratach was wound up after the May 2019 edition, ending a near 28-year run of the publication, which was enjoyed by readers for its chatty mix of news and features.

It was decided to discontinue the publication following the departure of editor Anne Macdonald after two years in the post.

Meanwhile the project to revive Portskerra Play Park is ongoing.

Highland Council closed the play park, located on Mackay Terrace, in 2020 and removed all the equipment, which was deemed to be unsafe.

The play park sub-committee is raising funds and donations can be made here.
