NORTHERN Constabulary is warning drivers in Caithness to take care on the roads as gusts are expected to reach nearly 90 mph tonight.

The Far North was battered by severe weather conditions last night as winds up to 70 mph swept across the county.

Despite the adverse conditions, police said there had been no reported accidents, but officers are constantly monitoring the situation.

A spokesperson at Thurso Police Station said: "We have had no reports of any major damage caused by the severe windy conditions so far. We are waiting for the Highland Council weather report but, so far, the winds are not predicted to be high until later on tonight."

Ferry services have also been disrupted with Pentland Ferries cancelling its 7.45am sailing from St Margaret’s Hope and 9.30am service from Gills Bay. It has also moved its 5pm service from St Margaret’s Hope to 4pm and the 6.30pm sailing from Gills Bay to 5.30pm.

NorthLink Ferries revealed all of today’s sailings on its Pentland Firth route from Scrabster to Stromness are currently running, but is advising tomorrow’s sailings are under review.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for Caithness as gusts are expected to reach 89 mph at 9pm tonight, with heavy snow likely tomorrow morning.
