Wick weather expert Keith Banks reported that the town experienced its second warmest day for any February since 1910 as the temperature peaked at 14.5C (58.1F). The current record for highest temperature in the town for the month is 15.3C (59.5F), recorded on February 28, 2012.

Keith said: “Thursday also saw the Scottish record for highest February temperature being broken when 18.3C (64.9F) was reached at Aboyne. The previous highest temperature for February in Scotland was 17.9C (64.2F), recorded on February 22, 1897.

“The remarkable weather has been caused by a southerly airstream that is sourcing warm tropical air from the region of the Canary and Cape Verde Islands off the coast of north-west Africa.”
